People often come into the studio asking for information about their quilt, regarding it’s age, pattern and condition. Often, these questions can be handled with just a 20 minute verbal consultation to provide some insights about your family heirloom that you recently inherited, or a vintage or contemporary quilt that you own. This consultation will help you decide if you need to arrange for a full appraisal. Betty will direct you to resources for finding a local Quilt Appraiser.
So when do you need a written Quilt Appraisal?
There are three times when you would need to have your quilted item appraised.
Insurance. If you have a valuable piece, it is often not protected under you usual insurance policy. You may need to get it appraised and valued, and get a rider for your insurance. Or if you have entered your quilt into a quilt show, or need to mail it to a family member, these would be appropriate times to get an appraisal.
Sale. You may be a contemporary quilt artist and are lucky enough to be selling your items or hanging them in a gallery. Getting an appraised value of your quilts, would give you an idea of current market conditions, and what you could expect to get as a sale price for you work.
Donation, gift or estate. If you have quilted items, new or old, that you want to donate and claim on your taxes, you must have them appraised. This would also include items that are part of an estate to be settled.
Many factors are used to determine a quilt’s value; pattern, size, age, maker, color, fabrics, techniques, batting, backing, quilting, edge finish and most important, condition. Other factors, might include provenance, history, owner, and any awards.
Appraisers assign realistic values using factual data based on todays market. Each quilt is carefully examined and a photo record is taken. The appraisal report will include the resources and methods used to evaluate each quilt.
